|section-left|My name is Sukhleen, I’m 18 years old. I was born in Mumbai, India, and grew up in Punjab, a region full of colour, festivals, music, and close-knit families. My childhood memories are of me riding my bike at the end of the day. 

The most important person in my life has always been my mother. When I was little, I used to fall asleep with my hand on her face so I could feel safe. So when she had to leave India to work in another country, it felt as if a part of me had become empty. Years later, when I was finally able to reunite with her in Portugal, we cried with joy — it felt like getting a piece of my world back. 

Adapting wasn’t always easy. At school, I faced moments of loneliness because I didn’t speak Portuguese. I cried many nights, but I found strength in my family, in my faith, and in the Matriz project — especially in Gina, who always believed in me. 

Today, I speak Portuguese, I help others who face the same barriers, and I continue to dream about my future: I want to become a psychologist, be independent, and change lives the way others changed mine. 

Taking part in the DiVERGE programme was a way of turning my story into something visible and beautiful. I chose light-coloured sneakers because, to me, light represents everything that guided me here: the hope of finding my mother again, the courage to start over in a new country, and the kindness of the people who helped me when I felt lost. The soft colours reflect my desire for peace, empathy, and healing — values I want to carry into my life and into the profession I’ve chosen.|section-left||section-right|
